Your child’s first appointment will be for a detailed assessment and consultation with one of our Specialist Paediatric Dentists.
We will discuss any concerns or problems and, following a detailed examination, we will go through the treatment needs and options available. We may need to carry out some urgent treatment if required, for instance in cases of dental trauma. However, we understand that very often patients and also parents, come to see us for the first time with a degree of anxiety and we know that behaviour of the child in the first dental visit often shapes the behaviour in subsequent visits. Therefore, we aim to make this first visit an easy and positive introduction to dentistry, whilst evaluating the anxiety and co-operation levels of the child.
Very young children, below three years of age, need the physical presence of their parent, and above that, we treat them by themselves. We invite parents of those older children to sit in full view of the treatment in an adjoining room, as passive observers, but we respectfully request that while treatment is being carried out communication is just between ourselves and the patient. Many studies have shown a clear relationship between parents and their child’s dental anxieties, so a parent who communicates those feelings to his or her child will probably make the child anxious at the same time, which in turn make the child’s ability to cope with treatment, and our task, more difficult.
